Profoto B10X Plus Kit
Pros: Great for location work. Incredibly small and lightweight for how powerful it is. Decent strength model light with the ability to control the color temperature. Lots of optional compatible modifiers.
Cons: Limited power. Slow recycle if on full power.
Profoto D2 1000
Pros: Very strong and consistent. Fast recycle time even on full power for constant firing.
Cons: Heavier and bigger than the B10 series lights. Needs constant power via wall plug or a battery pack.
Profoto XL Umbrella
Great lightweight and easy to travel with modifier. Only con is that there aren’t many good baffling options if you want to limit spread. Great for creating a big, soft source.
You’ll also want this complimentary diffuser for the umbrella: XL Diffuser
Profoto L Umbrella
Still a great soft modifier. I only use this one when space is limited for me. Otherwise I typically prefer the XL. The Large size is also great if using it through another modifier since it won’t eat as much power as the XL but will still provide a nice first spread for your source.
Profoto Beauty Dish
Great for… beauty. Indirect light source. Add a diffusor or grid for more control (less spill) or diffusion. Incredibly soft light in a small package. You will also need all or some of these things: Beauty Dish Grid, Beauty Dish Case, 1/3 stop diffuser - or you can get it all as a kit.
Westcott Optical Spot by Lindsay Adler (Profoto Mount)
My favorite tool for doing interesting things with light shaping or for faking sun, particularly indoors or in-studio.
V-Flats
Extremely versatile tools for controlled environments. Fill or kill light with white or black sides.
Profoto Connect Pro Trigger
This is a fairly new trigger from Profoto that wasn’t out yet during the workshop but I have since purchased them and love them.
Profoto OCF II Grid and Gel System
Recommended for the B10 series and any D1/D2 500 or B1/B1x 500 lights. I would not recommend this for any 1000ws lights like the above D2 1000 lights. The model lamp and even the strobe itself can melt these gels. It is perfectly safe and incredibly convenient for 500ws lights like the ones listed above.
Profoto OCF II Barn Doors
Helpful for killing spill if using as a “bare bulb”.
Avenger Junior Roller Stand
My (Patrick) personal favorite stand. Heavy duty and balanced. Can raise higher than a c-stand.
Avenger C-Stand
Studio and location go-to stand for strobes and grip gear.
Sunbounce Sunswatter
Amazing location lighting modifier best for working with natural light. Kirk can be seen using this with great regularity for his location lifestyle work. Requires an assistant to hold it, but this is a very useful and nimble tool for working quickly with the sun.
Westscott Scrim Jim Cine Kit (8’ x 8’)
Scrim kit for studio or location. This kit is a lightweight version from Westcott that is easy to throw in your car or to fly with, when needed. The kit includes diffusion, bounce and neg. I also love using the 1/4 stop silk for very slight diffusion while retaining highlights when using this with the sun on location. The 1/4 stop silk would have to be purchased separate from this kit. They also make smaller versions of this kit, if desired.
DIT/Camera Carts
A lot of different options here but only two are worth really spending good money on imo. Otherwise I’d suggest just getting a Rock-N-Roller cart of your choice and bootlegging it a bit with their trays ($300ish).
For a professional but slightly more budget friendly choice I’d suggest the Lava Cart Vesuvius Kit. They sell it with the compatible Rock-N-Roller cart or separate if you already have the proper cart and only need these attachments.
For the industry standard pro cart I’d suggest anything from Inovativ. Kirk and Caleb both use the Inovativ Voyager NXT 42. Patrick uses the slightly smaller and lighting Inovativ Voyager EVO X 30. The best thing about the Inovativ carts is that they’re modular so you build yours to suit your needs. The attachments get very pricey in addition to the already expensive cart but you get what you pay for - they’re all very, very well made.
Pelican 1535 Air Camera Case
There is no better camera case imo than these 1535 cases from Pelican. They’re lighter than the 1510, but the exact same size. Both roll and have an extendable handle for carrying on planes / traveling but are extremely durable and are waterproof. I would personally recommend getting one of the ones that has the Trekpak insert for the inside as well as the Mesh Lid Organizer. That will allow you to customize the inside to perfectly fit your lenses and camera bodies snugly as well as have room in the lid for all of your cables and nic-nacs. Fwiw, I have occasionally needed an extra set of TrekPak dividers to fully organize my cases the way I wanted. I like buying mine from Colorcase, as linked above, only because they have so many in-stock options not only for colored accessories but also all of the desirable attachments and inserts, which can be hard to come by from some camera retailers.
